Abstract

Aluminum alloy 2618 has been subjected to in-situ upset forming tests in the temperature range 300 to 800 K at strain rates of 0. 02 to 200 s** minus **1. Flow curves are obtained from transient measurements made during the tests. The flow stress is related to the process parameters by means of some empirical rate equations, and the apparent activation energy and apparent activation volume for hot deformation of the alloy is evaluated. Based on the evaluated activation parameters, a mechanism of dynamic recovery involving cross-slip of screw dislocations has been suggested as the rate-controlling deformation mechanism in hot deformation of 2618 alloy.
