Abstract
The power to gas (PtG) technology, which converts electric power and carbon dioxide into natural gas, has been commercialized in recent years. The introduction of the PtG technology makes the bidirectional energy flow between a power system and a natural gas system become reality, thus enhancing the coupling of the combined multi-energy system. The PtG technology provides an alternative solution to the accommodation of intermittent renewable energy generation. Given this background, the day-ahead schedule of a combined electricity-gas-heat multi-energy system with PtG devices and benefit analysis of accommodating wind power generation are addressed in this work. First, the PtG technology is introduced. Secondly, an optimization model for multi-energy system operation is presented, with the characteristics of PtG devices, power and natural gas systems taken into account. Finally, an integrated energy system including the IEEE 39-bus test system and Belgium gas network is employed to demonstrate the presented model, and the benefits of PtG in promoting the accommodation of wind power generation are discussed as well. © 2017 IEEE.
