Abstract

As environmental awareness grows, data migration projects must integrate sustainability into their core objectives. This study explores the intersection of data migration and sustainability, advocating for a paradigm shift that extends beyond traditional efficiency metrics. It introduces ten core concepts for environmentally responsible and efficient migration practices, encompassing energy-efficient infrastructure, data minimization through circular lifecycle management, strategic cloud adoption and legacy decommissioning, regulatory compliance, stakeholder alignment, resource optimization via automation, scalability and adaptability, comprehensive data governance incorporating sustainability metrics, sustainable data storage and archiving, and collaborative innovation through knowledge sharing.

Below we explained how one should view each introduced concept:

1. Prioritize Energy-Efficient Infrastructure: Elevate your data migration strategies by prioritizing hardware, software, and cloud solutions that promote energy efficiency, reduced power consumption, and the utilization of renewable energy sources.
2. Implement Data Minimization and Lifecycle Management Considering the Circular Data Lifecycle Concepts: Adopt robust data governance practices that enable data minimization, responsible data handling, and sustainable data lifecycle management - from acquisition to secure disposal.
