Cyclic deformation characteristics of titanium-matrix composite reinforced with in-situ TiB whiskers

    Abstract

    The cyclic deformation characteristics of titanium based metal matrix composites (TMC) reinforced with TiB whiskers were investigated. The TMCs were synthesized using reactive hot pressing (RHP) process. The Resulting TiB whiskers showed an average aspect ratio of 6.67 that is larger than the critical value of 2.26. It was observed that the whiskers contributed to the strengthening effect of Ti and to the high fatigue endurance stress of the composites. The TiB/Ti composite was found to exhibit a relatively stable cyclic response at low strain amplitudes.
