Cross-transmission of exhaled contaminants in a hospital ward with impinging jet supply

Abstract

Impinging jet ventilation (IJV) systems effectively mitigate exhaled contaminants because they supply fresh air directly to the occupied zone and remove polluted or heated air from ceiling exhausts. However, the transfer of exhaled contaminants in hospital wards is unclear. Previous research on ventilating hospital wards with IJV systems was essentially a personalized ventilation system. This study aims to investigate the transmission of exhaled aerosols in an IJV system ventilated hospital ward. Results indicate that vertically exhaled aerosols are transferred from the patient opposite the diffuser to the patient near the diffuser, despite low air velocity in the room. These results indicate that the airflow created by the jet supply plays an important role in cross-transmission. © 2023 Healthy Buildings 2023: Asia and Pacific Rim. All rights reserved.
