Abstract
Living organisms, regularly submitted to fluctuations in the ambient environment, are able to regulate their inner environment to ensure its stability by homeostatic processes. Homeostatic processes may operate at different levels of biological organisation, and each level has the ability to absorb change without a reduction in fitness to survive (Lawrence and Hemingway 2007).
