    Abstract

Corrosion behavior of glassy Ti41.5Zr2.5Hf5Cu42.5Ni7.5Si1 (numbers indicate at.%) alloy in 3 mass% NaCl, 1N HCl and 1N H2SO4 solutions was studied by immersion test and electrochemical measurements. The glassy alloy was spontaneously passivated in the acids and brine, although pitting corrosion occurred by anodic polarization at higher potential for the alloy in the Cl--containing solutions. The passive current densities were of the order of 10-3 A/m2 in the NaCl and HCl solutions and was around 10-1 A/m2 in the H2SO4 solution. The immersion test indicated low corrosion rates of the order of 10-3 mm/year for the glassy Ti41.5Zr2.5Hf5Cu42.5Ni7.5Si1 alloy in the solutions. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
