Abstract

Wisdom is an important asset, having shown a contribution to well-being in the older adult. The contribution, nevertheless, has not been clear in the Asian context. To clarify and elaborate the contribution there, this study utilized data from a questionnaire of 142 Chinese elders in Hong Kong. The analysis controlled for the elder’s mastery as well as a number of background characteristics. Results showed that wisdom derived from inspirational engagement (i.e., social relations) contributed to self-esteem; whereas wisdom derived from emotional management (i.e., dealing with life situations) contributed to life satisfaction. Social support also plays an important role in the elder’s well-being. Accordingly, the primary caregiver’s support contributed to the elder’s life satisfaction unconditionally, whereas non-caregiver support indicated a contribution to life satisfaction contingent on the elder’s instrumental dysfunction. The results thus imply that helping elders to make social contributions and manage life situations can improve their well-being.
