Abstract

It is well acknowledged that a group of United Nations members established the global agenda for sustainable development goals (SDGs) in 2015. SDGs cannot be achieved by national governments only. MNEs can proactively engage with and contribute to this global ambition through responsible business and management, environmental sustainability, and green development. This study aims to investigate how Chinese MNEs respond to governmental SDG initiatives by participating in environmental sustainability. Specifically, we assess how MNEs’ corporate environmental responsibility (CER) influences their overseas operating revenue. Moreover, with the impact of green innovation, the promotion effect of CER on overseas operating revenue is strengthened. However, MNEs’ ownership concentration negatively moderates the relationship between CER and overseas operating revenue. Using the panel data of publicly listed Chinese MNEs from 2008 to 2022, this study discusses the bridging research on CER and overseas operational strategies in international business to drive MNEs’ growth through sustainability.
