Abstract

The focus/quantificational particle dou 都 in Mandarin has been a highly controversial topic in the literature. Recent proposals (Liao 2011; Xiang 2016; Liu 2017) have suggested unifying analyses across various uses of dou based on the alternatives-and-exhaustification framework (Chierchia 2013), including the unconditional (1), the even-focus construction (2), and the con-struction in (3) where dou appears to interact with a preceding plural NP.
(1) 我誰都見過
(2) 我連張三都見過
(3) 他們都睡了
Adopting the same framework, I propose a new analysis where dou-sentences are anti-exhaustive contrastive topic (CT) constructions in Mandarin.
