Abstract

This paper presents an efficient compressionscheme for grey-scale / color compound documents.Pixel blocks are classified into different categoriesaccording to image feature and selected decorrelationschemes are applied to different classes before hybridtransform and entropy coding. Experiment resultsshow that the scheme is competitive against state-ofthe-art image / video compression schemes over awide range of images from pure text to compounddocument to pure pictorial content. A PSNRdifference of up to 13dB is observed over the latestJPEG2000 part 1 implementation. The scheme is alsoattractive in terms of decoder requirement for it doesnot make use of arithmetic coding nor masked layercoding.
