Abstract
Compensated dating has become widespread among teenagers over the last ten years in Hong Kong. The study examined the influence of materialism, normlessness and the openness of sexual attitude on the acceptance of compensated dating among 284 teenagers ranging from age 11 to 17 years old. Data was collected from two secondary schools in Hong Kong in February 2010. Correlation and multiple regression analysis were used to test the relationship among variables. Results reveal that materialism, normlessness and sexual attitude are significantly associated with the acceptance of compensated dating. However, in the multiple regression analysis, materialism do not have significant effects on the acceptance of compensated dating, while normlessness and sexual attitude showed significantly effects on the acceptance of compensated dating. The results challenge the general public’s perception that materialism is the main cause of compensated dating. The study points to the need to raise the awareness of compensated dating and give some directions of social action.
