Compact and Low-Profile Dual-Polarized Phased Filtenna Array based on Micro-Mode SIW

Abstract

In this paper, a compact dual-polarized phased filtenna array is presented and characterized by an ultra-low profile and a simple structure. It is realized by introducing the novel micro-mode SIW (MMSIW) into the feeding network of a patch antenna, which not only provides a filtering response but also enhances the operating bandwidth. The size of the proposed MMSIW cavity is significantly reduced compared with that of conventional eighth-mode SIW (EMSIW) cavity, thereby ensuring the overall compactness of the array. The profile of the array is only 0.04 λc, demonstrating a notable improvement over state-of-the-art designs. The simplistic structure ensures the ease of fabrication. The center frequency of the phased filtenna array is 5GHz, with a fractional bandwidth of 20% and a 25dB stopband suppression. An 8×8 array prototype has been successfully fabricated and measured, which exhibits a stable filtering function across scanning angles ranging from 0 to ±45°. The effectiveness of the design is validated by the measured results.
