Abstract

Communicating through English during the internship of Computer Science studentsThe purpose of this investigation is to provide information on how an English for Specific Purposes course should be designed to help Computer Science students in a university communicate effectively in English during their internship. With this in view, investigations on the English communication needs of 20 Computer Science students in a pilot study and 105 students in a study of a larger scale were made through a questionnaire and interviews. This paper reports on the questionnaire results from both studies, which reveal (1) the kinds of jobs that the students did during internship, (2) the kinds of documents that they needed to read and write in English, (3) the occasions on which they needed to listen to and speak in English, and (3) the kinds of difficulties that they encountered when they read, wrote, listened to and spoke in English. In-depth information related to the above-mentioned areas was also collected through interviews. Implications for course design will be discussed.
