Chronology, Classification, Notation: Performance in the Long Run

This is a research presentation series co-organized by the Asia Art Archive and Lingnan University's Cultural Studies Department on the art of documentation. It comprised of TWO events:

SUMMARY:
In July 1989, a performance work took place at the Sheung Wan Civic Centre, titled "Object-Activities". It comprised a series of improvised actions with objects and body movements, as artists from the visual arts, literature and dance created a space of mourning following the crackdown on the Tianamen Square protests. In 2006 and again in 2016, the artist Linda Lai attempted to reconceives the 1989 performance.
In this talk and workshop, Linda Lai explores various notational means, from chronological classification to textural transcription, to consider new ways by which the limitations of incomplete and fragmentary documentaries of past events could be overcome through forging the historical relationships with that material.
