Abstract

Goethe spoke of Weltliteratur when he was reading a Chinese novel in translation; so in the originary moment of the concept, world literature was already connected with Chinese literature through translation. Despite its huge number of speakers and a long and rich literary history, however, the Chinese language is not the lingua franca in today’s world, and neither is Chinese literature widely known outside its own linguistic and cultural environment. A work of literature becomes globally significant as part of world literature only through circulation beyond its original linguistic and literary environment not just in translation, but translation into the lingua franca of the time. Today’s world has English as its de facto lingua franca, and this chapter will discuss the problems of translation or translatability, and how canonical Chinese works of literature can become part of world literature through translation and critical scholarship.
