Characterization of triboelectric nanogenerators

Research output: Chapters, Conference Papers, Creative and Literary Works › RGC 12 - Chapter in an edited book (Author) › peer-review

Abstract

The performance of a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is normally characterized by electrical and mechanical properties. This chapter begins with the plot of built-up voltage-total transferred charges, TENG operation cycle with maximized energy output. It proposes the performance figure of merit (FOM) to evaluate TENG design considering both the maximized energy conversion efficiency and average output power. The chapter demonstrates both structural FOM and material FOM for different structures of TENGs and various materials, respectively. The fundamental mechanism of the TENG is the coupling effect of triboelectrification and electrostatic induction. For the TENG operating in "cycles for maximized energy output" with infinite load resistance, the period T includes two parts of time. One part is from the relative motion in TENG, and the other is from the discharging process in short-circuit condition. © 2019 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA.
