Changes in Multi-Physiological Parameters during Cold Pressor Test

Abstract

Photoplethysmogram (PPG) signal and its derived parameters have been widely used for non-invasive estimation of cuffless blood pressure (BP). However, it was observed that the PPG and BP can be affected by the temperature especially in cold environment. In this study, the effects of cold pressor test (CPT) on PPG signals and continuous BP (cBP) were investigated in 6 adult volunteers. PPG amplitude, pulse transit time (PTT), heart rate (HR), systolic BP (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP) were analyzed during 3 different periods of rest, CPT and recovery. The results revealed that the temperature can alter the BP and morphology of the PPG signals, consequently affecting the derived parameters. These findings underscore the importance of temperature compensation or control in PPG-based methods for cardiovascular health assessment and tonoarteriogram (TAG)/cBP estimation.
