abstract = "It is claimed that urban development increases the consumption of energy and other resources, slashes the functions of ecosystems, and boosts the impact of climate change, resulting in an urbanization-emission nexus in different parts of the world. The nexus has been a key topic in research on green governance and sustainable urbanization in China. Some scholars have focused on the limited successes of central climate mandate due to local noncompliance in China. Others have highlighted the spatial impact of a few central policies on decoupling urbanization from emission in recent years, which is an apparent challenge to the literature on local noncompliance. This chapter reviews these two literatures and extends the insights from the logic of local noncompliance to develop a logic of local compliance to address these questions. Data are from a provincial panel dataset for the period of 1992-2021 (N = 925). This chapter estimates and shows the temporal impact of central policy changes on the move toward sustainable urbanization in China. {\textcopyright} The Editors and Contributors Severally 2024.
