Abstract
Local and regional anesthetic techniques are a vital component in the provision of balanced anesthesia. There are many benefits to incorporating regional anesthesia into analgesic protocols, including attenuation of sympathetic responses to surgery, decreased requirement of systemic opioids and inhalational anesthetics, and potential for improved recovery and return to function. Techniques may range in complexity, from simple local infiltration techniques to more complex ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia techniques. Several regional anesthetic techniques are presented in this chapter. While a detailed description of each technique is beyond the scope of this chapter, the reader is directed toward individual references for greater detail regarding technical aspects of particular blocks. © 2024 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
