Abstract

The power flow equation is used to calculate the frequency response and bandwidth in step-index plastic optical fibres (POFs). The frequency response is specified as a function of distance from the input fibre end. Good agreement is seen between our analytical results and the experimental results from the literature. Mode-dependent attenuation and mode dispersion and coupling are known to be strong in POFs, leading to major implications for their frequency response in data transmission systems. © 2012 The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
