Abstract

We demonstrate broadband chaos generation using a modulated optical injection into a semiconductor laser. The optical injection is responsible for inducing a high-frequency microwave oscillation. A weak modulation is then applied to reduce the fluctuations of the frequency generated. However, as the modulation amplitude continues to increase, the dynamics follow a quasi-periodic route to chaos. The resultant chaotic bandwidth is larger than that attainable with constant optical injection alone. The results are applicable for improving the precisions of chaotic lidar and radar measurements.
