Abstract
Industrial sustainability has pushed biosurfactants as a tool for many companies. Biosurfactants offer possibility of replacing chemical surfactants, produced from nonrenewable resources and/or cheap renewable feedstocks. Biosurfactants are also attractive as they are ecofriendly. The most promising biosurfactants nowadays are glycolipids, lipopeptides, phospholipids, fatty acids/natural lipids, polymeric surfactants, and particulate biosurfactants. Biosurfactants find utility in various industrial sectors such as petroleum, food, beverage, cosmetics, detergents, pharmaceuticals, and environmental protection and management. This chapter highlights prospects for commercial exploration of a new generation microbial biosurfactants as a tool in bioremediation and microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR). © 2017 Springer International Publishing AG.
