Abstract
Large amount of organic wastes is being produced every year at an alarming rate. The annual generation of food waste, agriculture waste and biodiesel waste worldwide were estimated around 1.3 billion tonnes, 100 billion tonnes and 600 million tonnes, respectively. Whereas the annual generation of textile waste in China, United States and United Kingdom were 26.0, 1.0 and 12.4 million tonnes. The conventional management methods include landfilling and incineration. However, large material lost in landfilling or incineration would be unavoidable in the current linear economy of ‘take-make-use-dispose’ system which creates negative impacts on the environment and society. Utilisation of waste in a sustainable way using green technologies would be a desirable approach for waste management. In this chapter, conversion of food waste, agriculture waste, biodiesel waste and textile waste into value-added products via biorefinery concept is presented.
