N2 - During the past few years we have witnessed much discussion concerning the new revolution in quality technology. the essence of this revolution has been a move towards off-line quality control, with emphasis on the use of the so-called Taguchi approach. It is pointed out that an encompassing perspective on the Taguchi approach can be provided by statistical decision analysis. The subject deals with decision making in the face of partial or no information, and defines an optimum decision as one that maximizes average utility.
