Research output: Conference Papers › RGC 33 - Other conference paper › peer-review

Abstract

Audio description (AD) provides accessibility service for people who are visually impaired by rendering images into words. With a relatively short history, AD in Hong Kong has received increasing attention from both the public and academia over the past 20 years. As a result, AD practice, research and training have developed rapidly in this region. However, the discussion of AD in Hong Kong often focuses on the competence of individuals and institutions, few studies, if any, have defined or measured the broader AD capacity of the region. It is not clear what roles the government, NGOs and individuals play in the management, how much AD has covered in various kind of media products, how many AD training programs are offered and how much researchers in Hong Kong have contributed to the professional community. In order to answer these questions, this study examines the overall capacity of AD in Hong Kong. The results contribute to the understanding of AD development in Hong Kong, and highlight the importance of AD in enhancing national strength and global influence.
