Abstract

I will introduce my approach towards composition with synthetic sounds. Systems to create synthetic sounds (like synthesizer, pd- patches or supercollider code etc.) can easily reach a complexity where the control parameters do not represent a single exclusive identifiable aspect of the sound. The complexity of the sound synthesis aims towards a complexity in the sounds which can bring them closer to sounds known from everyday live. In my work my Synthesizers create sounds which are referring to things like animal screams, bird singing etc. I like to show how I work in my compositions with the identity and ambiguity of sounds. My approach is based on the idea that the specificity of a sound-synthesis is expressed in its inherent relations between parameters and the transitions between sounds, while the sound-synthesis is hidden when a sounds gets an identity other than being a synthetic sound. My synthesizers are designed in a way that they can produce sounds which remind of other sounds. I use presets and interpolations to create transitions between different sounds. In this process the appearing sounds often lose their associative content and show their origin. The origin is the structure of the sound synthesis. In this way the resulting musical developments oscillate between associative and musical/analytical hearing. I am currently developing a Graphical User Interface which helps me to easy find presets and will help me to structure the parameter space without referring to the actual parameters.
