Abstract
The discourse around 'Asian values' has been used as a cultural argument against liberal democracy, with authoritarian regimes employing the concept since the 1990s. Recent years have seen a revival of anti-liberal sentiment in parts of Southeast Asia and China, who emphasise economic development and community welfare over democracy and individual rights, an approach that is increasingly gaining traction among Western right-wing populists.
