Abstract
The virus families Arteriviridae and Roniviridae are included in the order Nidovirales, along with Coronaviridae. The family Roniviridae includes a single genus Okavirus with virus species that infect crustaceans. Arterivirus virions are spherical, 45-74nm in diameter, consisting of an isometric nucleocapsid of 25-39nm in diameter, surrounded by a lipid envelope. Roniviruses are enveloped, bacilliform virions with rounded ends. Equine arteritis virus is the causative agent of equine viral arteritis in horses, a respiratory and reproductive disease that occurs worldwide. Clinical signs of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome are extremely variable and influenced by strains of the virus, the immune status of the herd, and management practices. Lactate dehydrogenase elevating virus causes lifelong asymptomatic, persistent infections in mice that can only be recognized by elevated levels of plasma lactate dehydrogenase. © 2022 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
