Abstract
The structure of passive films formed in borate buffer solution have been studied by transmission electron microscopy. Strong epitaxial relationships exist between the passive films and substrate in an Fe-3Cr alloy. However, increasing the chromium content to 12% leads to formation of a poorly-oriented spinel passive film. The films containing the highest chromium concentrations (18%) possess an amorphous structure. Crystallographic pitting was observed in Fe-3Cr due to breakdown of the film. Electron microscopy has also been performed to study the microstructures formed in the temperature range 400-850 degree C. The effects of temperature and chromium content are discussed.
