Abstract
The July 2012 Special issue of Proceedings of the IEEE covers antennas used in currently existing or planned for future wireless communication systems in a variety of areas ranging from digital cellular networks and wireless senor networks to Global Navigation Satellite Systems and body-centric wireless communication systems. The first section consists of four papers summarizing important advances in analytical tools and measurement techniques for characterization and design of wireless communication antennas. Several papers have been dedicated to this section. The second section consists of six papers reviewing the latest development of five types of generic antennas, including slot antennas, wire antennas, microstrip patch antennas, dielectric resonator antennas, and leaky-wave antennas. The third and fourth sections look at the development of wireless communication antennas from different perspectives.
