Abstract
A quasi three-dimensional isoparametric finite element has been developed for the linear elastic static stress analysis of variable thickness (stepped) laminated plates of infinite width subjected to a uniform inplane load. Numerical results are given for a single step plate with various arrangements for the ply fibre directions. Very high peak stresses are predicted in the corner region of the step, but these are reduced when a resin fillet is included in the theoretical model for the stepped region. © 1986.
