Abstract

In this paper, the Ritz variational method is proposed to analyze the characteristics of the higher order TM modes for pentagonal waveguides. A series of functions are used as basis function to satisfy the boundary condition of the pentagonal waveguide metal wall. Then the scalar Helmholtz equation is satisfied using the Galerkin technique, and a linear matrix equation is obtained. The zeros of the matrix determinant are solved for the cutoff wavenumbers. The cutoff wavenumber of the first-order mode is compared with those of the literature and a good agreement is found between them.
