Sewers is a critical infrastructure for the modern society, with an estimated value of one trillion dollars in the USA and $100 billion in Australia. Microbially induced concrete corrosion is a worldwide and costly deteriorating process for sewer systems by shortening the service life. This paper presents findings from our past and ongoing research projects that was primarily funded by Australian Research Council and undertaken with the major water utilities in Australia since 2008. The 10-year research aimed to understand the corrosion processes and mechanisms, determine the relationship between sewer environmental factors and corrosion rate of concrete, and develop next-generation technologies for future sewers.
