An Investigation of Approaches to Learning and Teaching for Quantity Surveying Students in Hong Kong

Abstract

In order to enhance the learning outcomes of surveying students, a positive learning approach is the first step for all surveying students. Based on the theoretical framework of Biggs’s (1987) learning theory and Fox’s (1983) teaching theory, a questionnaire survey was designed to understand the learning approaches and teaching approaches of surveying students in Hong Kong. The results indicated that the simple teaching approaches (i.e. transferring and shaping approaches) are correlated to surface learning approach (surface motive and surface strategy) and the developed teaching approaches (i.e. traveling and growing teaching approaches) are linked to both deep learning approach (deep motive and deep strategy) and achieving learning ( achieving motive and achieving strategy). In order to stimulate their deep and achieving learning approaches during the surveying education process, traveling and growing teaching approaches are recommended to be adopted by surveying educators.
