Abstract
Audio description is an assistive service that helps visually impaired people and the elderly with poor eyesight or dementia by rendering images into words. Through describing what is going on screen, AD users can perceive the information comprehensively as sighted people do. AD enables its users to enjoy theatre performances, movies, and TV programs. Audio description is an emerging topic in Translation Studies. It can be considered as inter-semiotic translation (the translation from the images into words) intralingual translation (the translation from a written script into a spoken one) and inter-lingual translation (the translation of audio description scripts as a way of creating audio description). By reviewing the literature on studying audio description as Translation Studies, this pilot study investigates into the current research status of audio description and its possible future research directions.
