An experimental study on user interpretation of icons

Research output: Journal Publications and ReviewsRGC 21 - Publication in refereed journalpeer-review

Abstract

This paper reports on an experimental study that investigates the effect of domain knowledge on novice users' interpretation of icons. The results indicate that domain knowledge has no significant effect on the accuracy of interpretation. Domain knowledge, however, significantly affects the time taken to interpret the icons and the confidence level of the users. The theoretical perspective on the interpretation of icons is also discussed.
