Abstract

Building within the basic framework of the Du-Babcock and Babcock model, the present study reports on the expatriate-local personnel communication. Thirty-eight Hong Kong-based expatriates were interviewed. The interviews focused on the expatriates' perception of ease and effectiveness in communicating with Hong Kong bilingual Chinese personnel in the aspects of production, maintenance and innovative communication. Examples of miscommunication are presented and explored from the perspective of cultural and second language (English in this instance) proficiency.
