Abstract
Algorithmic Art, proceedings (collector's edition) is a 184-page organized research notes also presented as catalogue and documentation of a 2-week exhibition that aims to communicate to the general public the possibilities of art-science dialogues and the intricacies of new media creation with 15 works exhibited on site, augmented by an elaborate educational series. Funded by the Innovation & Technology Fund's General Project Grant, the exhibition explicitly advocates the STEM to STEAM principle for innovative education and forward-looking social development. With such purpose in mind, the catalogue is far more than the basic description of the artworks involved. First, it illustrates the process taken by each work from conception to final presentation through the use of diagrams. Second, each work is situated within the artist-maker's own research history to highlight creative continuities and breakthroughs. Third, the research team follows up on the conceptual and technical integrity of each work and moves into deep time research, to establish possible yet grounded genealogy, based on the philosophy and principles of Media Archaeology, a historiographic position contesting the writing of the history of technics. The proceedings began with collecting artist's statements from individual artist contributors, substantiated by the PI Linda Lai and her research team's research for the creative history of individual artists, which the PI integrates into a history of material culture highlighting relevant scientific and technological inventions that precede the exhibits. The proceedings thus end with the PI's conceptual statement in her experimental historiographic approach.
