Abstract

Most of the building projects are still adopting the traditional procurement arrangement with separated design and construction teams; however, there are many conflicts between two single parties. Based on that, design and build (D&B) procurement has become commonly adopted and accepted by the construction industry. This research aims to: (1) investigate the current practices of D&B projects and its characteristics in Macau; (2) examine current attractive features and shortcomings for various construction parties, and (3) identify success criteria improving project performance. Questionnaire survey and interview discussions are conducted. It is found that, after adopting D&B procurement arrangement, project period can be shortened, contractual relationship can be simplified and buildability of construction work is improved. Nevertheless, preparing employer’s requirement is difficult, contractor’s capability is weakened and overall project quality is reduced.
