Abstract
This entry traces the history of the study of adolescence and examines the definition from multiple disciplines. Adolescents growing up in a digital environment in the contemporary world face similar issues as the older generations and experience new difficulties in different ways. Research on adolescent developmental issues are reviewed and integrated from an ecological perspective. Major theories of adolescent development and challenges commonly found in developed countries are also reviewed from a developmental science perspective in order to identify research gaps and policy agendas for future action.
