Abstract
Significant progress has been made in the activity-based travel modeling in the past three decades to study individual and household travelling patterns and the term “lifestyle” is frequently used in the literature. In this paper, an activity-travel-based lifestyle classification is proposed to group individuals into a few relatively homogeneous lifestyle groups using individual and household characteristics, urban forms, transportation system attributes, and daily activity-travel patterns. Factor analysis is first used to identify important dimensions of the observable variables and cluster analysis is then used to create lifestyle groupings based on the factors obtained. By examining the characteristics of each lifestyle, researchers can gain a better understanding of the potential travel demand of different segments of individuals who may possibly respond differently to various land use and transportation planning policies. Tuen Mun new town is selected as the study area. Based on the database of the Hong Kong Travel Characteristics Survey 2002 (HKTCS2002), nine lifestyle groupings are identified for Tuen Mun.
