A Thermodynamic interpretation of the size-ratio limits for Laves phase formation

Research output: Journal Publications and ReviewsRGC 21 - Publication in refereed journalpeer-review

Abstract

A complete literature survey has been performed to obtain all the data on the enthalpies of formation of Laves phases. The observed enthalpies of formation varied over a wide range of 0 to about -350 kJ/mole. This observation indicate that metallic, covalent, and ionic bonds are possibly present in different Laves phases. Based on the data, it is asserted that the bonding characteristics in Laves phases are very complicated and, most likely, may be a mixed metallic-covalent-ionic bond in nature.
