Abstract
In this article, a switched-beam microstrip antenna array with miniaturized butler matrix network is proposed and experimentally verified. The miniaturized butler matrix network is implemented with the stub-loaded transmission lines (SLTLs). By adopting the proposed SLTLs to equivalently substitute the quarter-wavelength transmission lines of the couplers and crossovers in the traditional butler matrix network, the circuit area is immediately reduced without loss of performance. To prove the effectiveness of this substitution, the theoretical analysis is given. The proposed butler matrix only takes 45% of the area of a conventional one. Finally, a microstrip antenna array with the miniaturized butler matrix is fabricated, and the proposed design is validated by the measurement results. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
