Abstract
A survey on the English communication needs of Computer Science students during their internshipA pilot study was carried out with 20 Computer Science students to find out what English communication skills they needed in their internship. Results showed that there were some differences between what the parent department expected the students to learn and what they actually needed in the workplace. This confirms that in order to make an accurate choice about what to include and what to remove from the course, it is necessary to carry out a needs analysis on a larger scale to discover what communication skills are most needed in the students’ internship. This project aims at exploring through a questionnaire the written and oral English communication skills needed in the internship of 105 Computer Science students, the kinds of documents that they need to read and write and the kinds of oral communication that they need to engage in during their internship. The difficulties that the students face when performing communication tasks in their internship, the students’ views on whether the existing ESP course meets their needs and what they suggest should be included in the course will also be investigated. It is hoped that the information given by the students will inform the syllabus re-design of the existing English for Specific Purposes (ESP) course and other ESP courses in similar learning contexts.
