A study of children's shoplifting behavior: Implications to preventive measures

In the recent years, the rising number of child shoplifters has been alarming in Hong Kong. Although there has been a number of recent studies on delinquency, little has been done in exploring the underlying reasons and processes of shoplifting behavior among children in Hong Kong. This study intends to investigate 20 shoplifters aged 8 to 12. Based on self-reported data and official criminal records collected, most of the child shoplifters are not rational criminals. It was found that they have not critically evaluated the cost-benefit of their illegal behavior before committing the act. Only 35% of child shoplifters could be classified as rational criminals. Based on research findings, this paper discusses the implications for anti-theft strategies. © 2005 A B Academic Publishers.
