Abstract

A simple wide-beam antenna with compact size is proposed in this paper. The antenna consists of a driven slot, two parasitic slots, and a loading dielectric block. Each parasitic slot is located close to one end of the driven slot and perpendicular to it. Both beamwidth and impedance bandwidth are improved by introducing the parasitic slots. On top of the slots, a dielectric block is adapted to direct more waves upward and thus reduce the back lobe. An X-band antenna element with an H-plane 3-dB beamwidth of 185° is designed for demonstration. The element prototype was fabricated and measured. Reasonable agreement between the measured and simulated results is observed. Based on the proposed antenna element, a 9-element H-plane linear phased array would be constructed for wide-angle scanning.
