Abstract
A simple decoupling method for multiple patch antennas is presented. The proposed 1x2 multiple patch antennas are placed side by side with zero spacing. By inserting metallic vias, the coupled patch antennas are separated electromagnetically, although they are physically placed together. The isolation between the two ports can be enhanced, together with restored radiation patterns. To verify the proposed idea, 1 x 2 multiple patch antennas are designed, fabricated and measured. Good agreement is observed between the measured and simulated results. The measured overlapped impedance bandwidths are 1.34% with isolation larger than 18 dB. It should be highlighted that the measured radiation patterns show good symmetry and the maximum radiation is along z-axis, which verifies the proposed radiation patterns restoration. Over the designed frequency band, the measured envelope correlation coefficient (ECC) is less than 0.07, good enough for diversity or multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) systems.
