Abstract

In DC microgrids, when a short-circuit fault occurs, the large DC smoothing capacitors on the DC side of conventional AC/DC converters generate large short-circuit currents. To mitigate the effects of excessive short-circuit currents, a novel bipolar output, single-phase, four-switch AC/DC converter is proposed in this article. The proposed converter features inherent short-circuit current suppression, which utilizes the step-free nature of the inductor current to suppress the short-circuit current caused by the large DC smoothing capacitors, while also eliminating common-mode leakage currents through its grid-to-load common-ground structure. The performance of the proposed AC/DC converter and the feasibility of the overall solution is verified by simulation and experimental results.
