A new smart hydrodynamic journal bearing using giant magnetostrictive material actuators

    Abstract

    A new smart journal bearing based on giant magnetostrictive actuators (GMA) was proposed and evaluated with a self-developed GMA journal bearing-rotor system. The journal shaft centre loci and the static balance under controlled and uncontrolled running conditions were measured. Findings include: (a) The GMA static and dynamic displacement output is suitable for actuating hydrodynamic journal bearing. (b) Position of shaft centre can be actively adjusted by changing the magnetic field of GMA; (c) The unbalance vibration can be evidently restrained. These promising results prove that the controllable GMA journal bearing can improve the stability and enhance the rotational accuracy of rotor-bearing systems.
